  4.     Though it is rarely fatal, can be controlled by antibiotics
  5. and struck only 5,000 people nationwide last year, Lyme disease
  6. has become as dreaded as the black plague. Two weeks ago, the
  7. hysterical overreaction to the tick-borne affliction reached a
  8. new peak. Obsessed with fear that he had contracted Lyme disease
  9. when he was bitten by ticks on fur-trapping expeditions over the
  10. years and then passed it along to his spouse, a 73-year-old man
  11. killed his wife and then himself with a twelve-gauge shotgun in
  12. their East Detroit home.

  14.     Charles Bodeck, a retired autoworker, had been assured by
  15. doctors that he was not infected and that it is virtually
  16. impossible to pass the disease to another person. But Bodeck,
  17. described by relatives as a hypochondriac, did not believe
  18. them. When police found him, his mailbox was jammed with
  19. material describing the disease. Police also found a slip
  20. confirming that Bodeck had an appointment next week for yet
  21. another Lyme-disease test.
